Suphan Buri: A Feast For The Eyes | |||
UPDATE : 25 May 2010 | |||
While a government office may initially appear rather too basic to play host to a tourism-related attraction, Suphan Buri province’s Agricultural Promotion and Development Center has managed to do just that, having developed into an interesting travel destination, as well as providing a supportive training facility for local farmers. The site also includes a large public garden, as well as a plant supermarket, which sells a huge range of flowers and plants. Experiences Shared The center has now been operating for over a decade, providing local farmers and growers with assistance regarding every aspect of agricultural production. Under the Department of Agricultural Extension, the center’s main duty is to educate farmers on the cultivation of herbs, fruits and vegetables, including asparagus, banana, chili and papaya, as well as flowering plants, such as marigold and globe amaranth. On a practical level, the center is also involved in organizing the distribution of seedlings to farmers. But the center doesn’t solely function for farmers and growers, offering plenty of interesting activities for visitors within its huge 380-rai (61-hectare) site. The sights you will encounter during a visit to the center will be determined by the time of year you pay a visit. During January, you’ll find that the field located in front of the center, which is surrounded by pine trees, is filled with tulips. Around Mother’s Day (August 12), which marks the birthday anniversary celebration of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, you’ll see kra chiew (curcuma sessilis gage) blossoming in the fields. Although this plant is typically associated with Chaiyaphum province, it is comforting to find that it is also grows at the center, too. During December, many of the nearby fields are filled with glorious sunflowers. If you're not too sure where to start, you may wish to head towards the rear of the center where you'll find a cafeteria. This dining facility boasts an impressive Versailles-style rose garden and a pond with huge water lilies known as Victoria Amazonica, providing a feast for the eyes. The best place to enjoy this stunning view is from the tables and chairs located on the cafeteria's balcony. Located right next to the cafeteria is the center's nursery. The plants are arranged in rows like goods at a supermarket and customers can even help themselves to a trolley for transporting their purchases to the checkout. A range of about 400 different plant varieties are available here, including Aster, Banyan trees, Crown of Thorns (Euphorbiaceae), Frangipani, Philodendron, Silver Trumpet Tree, Ti Long Plant 'Tree of Kings' and Yellow Palm. Among the rose varieties available in a separate tent area are Foribunda, Grandiflora, Hybrid Tea, Miniature, Polyantha, Rambler, along with several shrub forms. If you find that you're flagging at this point, there are some vendors based here selling drinks and also some tables and chairs so you can rest your legs. The Agricultural Promotion and Development Center opens daily from 8.30 am-4.30 pm. For further information, call Tel: +66 (0)3 543 7704. Transport Connections: Car: Take Highway 321 all the way to Suphan Buri's U-Thong district. Take Highway 333 before switching to Route 3019. The center is located about two to three kilometers after the temple of Wat Khao Dee Sa-luk. |
