Nakornkara: A Perfect Spot to 'Sing-Along-a-Lot' | ||||
UPDATE : 1 June 2010 | ||||
The name Nakornkara was created by combining the Thai word nakorn, meaning 'city', with 'kara', an abbreviation of the word karaoke. While karaoke literally means 'empty orchestra' in Japanese, the internationalization of the word means it's widely known these days as a form of entertainment in which someone sings along with an instrumental soundtrack of a popular song, while following the words on screen. While karaoke is already a hugely popular activity in Thailand, Nakornkara is a Thai restaurant that includes all the necessary equipment required to embark on an evening of karaoke fun, accompanied by a varied Thai menu that includes over 200 dishes. Tasty Treats The local dishes available at Nakornkara are totally delicious based on my recent experience. While including plenty of fare that would typically be considered to be 'street' food, such as grilled chicken and vegetable spring rolls, the menu includes rather more complex and delicate dishes, too. Although many of the menu options might be considered to be 'signature' dishes, I decided to focus on just three. The first dish I opted for was khao pad platu ('fried rice with mackerel'), which proved to be an excellent choice. The fried rice was just right – neither too dry nor too moist – while the mackerel was ideal. While I only ordered a single portion, there was probably enough to serve two. Chef seemed to pay close attention to the preparation of this dish, too, since the stuffing was just right, while the casings remained crispy. The plum sauce accompanying the dish was a perfect combination of sweet and sour. Cream of The Crop From among the menu's curry options, I selected Mussaman haeng nua ('Mussaman beef curry with peanuts'), which was so tasty I would have to choose this as my favorite dish at Nakornkara. The beef was good quality, lean meat, while the curry was prepared with the restaurant's very own specially-prepared paste. Following the recent political uncertainties, I guess it will come as no surprise to hear that the restaurant was pretty busy when I paid it a visit at about 8 pm, even though the recent curfew was still in place. I would suggest that people wanted to enjoy an evening's karaoke to try and forget about the instability in the capital over recent weeks. Crooning Time Singing is a real skill, so, obviously, the more you practice, the better you'll become! Although I am aware of this fact, like many others, I tend to ignore it. While the karaoke rooms at Nakornkara are certainly state-of-the-art, there are several options, ranging in price from 650-2,000 baht ($19-61), depending on the size (the largest accommodating up to 20 people). The wireless microphone is especially convenient, particularly among the more expressive crooners. I'm not certain, but I think it even helped to improve the quality of my voice as I attempted some cheesy ballads from the 1990s. At the end of the day, I was extremely impressed by the food served at Nakornkara, while thankfully managing to generate a reasonable amount of applause among my friends when taking to the mike. Nakornkara is located just behind the Esplanade Shopping Mall on Ratchadapisek Road. It opens everyday from 5 pm-1 am. Members can enjoy various special promotions and discounts, while it should be noted that the restaurant-cum-karaoke venue will celebrate its first anniversary on June 9. For further information, or to make a reservation, contact Tel: +66 (0)2 245 0077-78, or visit http://www.nakornkara.com. Transport Connections: Train: The easiest way to reach the restaurant is to head for Thailand Cultural Center station on the MRT subway system.Take Exit 3 and head towards the Esplanade Shopping Mall. It will take you about five minutes to reach the mall on foot – Nakornkara is located right behind it. |
