The Atrium: Two-For-One Deal 'an Absolute Steal' | ||||
UPDATE : 4 June 2010 | ||||
The Landmark Bangkok's Atrium restaurant has just launched a buffet deal - offering terrific value for diners - called 'Come 2, Pay 1'. To cut to the chase, the International Buffet Dinner deal allows two people to enjoy The Atrium's extensive buffet dining treats for the price of one (1,400 baht [US$43], Sunday through Thursday, 1,600 baht on Fridays and Saturdays). The slightly higher price charged on Fridays and Saturdays makes perfect sense as you will find several additional items available on those two days, including the culinary delicacy foie gras ('fat liver') and oysters. An International Lunch deal, which runs from Monday through Saturday, is even more affordable (1,050 baht) and this is also available in a similar form on Sundays as a brunch deal (1,600 baht). The two-for-one deal also applies to both these meal formats. The Genuine Article While many hotels in the capital often turn to buffet deals as a practical way of attracting more custom, a large number are prone to using the format to 'mask' rather underhand tactics, such as offering eye-catching dishes that have been produced using substandard ingredients. I can say quite categorically here that this is absolutely not the case at The Atrium, where you will find only the highest quality dishes, produced with the very finest ingredients. The only surprise you are likely to encounter is the price of your dining experience, which will seem almost too good to be true. On entering The Atrium restaurant, you will first see an incredible display of desserts, including various fruits and a chocolate fountain, along with a huge range of mouthwatering creations, such as Lemon Cassis Mousse, Caramel Custard, Chocolate Tart and Fruit Tart. Raw Power If you enjoy Japanese cuisine, you'll certainly want to try this buffet deal. I began my meal with California Maki (a 'California Roll'), which was specially prepared for me, by hand, by the restaurant's sushi chef then served at my table. While, strictly speaking, this is a buffet experience, it should be noted that select dishes can be personally prepared for you then served at your table, adding even more value to the experience. If you're in a bit of a rush, though – fear not – there are lots of readily prepared sushi and sashimi portions to choose from, too. Another section of the buffet includes an eye-catching range of salad items, including a comprehensive range of cheeses and cold meats. There are also lots of what the French refer to as petits fours salés, which are bite-sized savory appetizers (salé literally means 'salted' or 'savoury'). Some of these creations might also be considered to be a form of tapas among diners hailing from Spanish-speaking countries. I decided to follow the recommendation of the F&B manager at The Landmark Bangkok and helped myself to some delicious lean slices of roast beef as my main course item. Since I grew up in England, it was natural enough to pour some gravy over the meat and also select a large Yorkshire pudding (a form of English dumpling made with batter). Other tempting cuts of meat include roast lamb, pork and chicken are also available in this area. Local Specialties If you prefer Thai cuisine, you won't be disappointed as The Atrium offers tons of appetizing dishes to whet your appetite. There's a dedicated station for somtam (spicy papaya salad), while you can also choose from various other interesting local dishes, such as yum pladook foo ('crispy catfish with mango salad'), for example. And when it comes to Thai desserts, The Atrium is second to none. While there are plenty of the very sweet and often chilled desserts popular among many locals available here, I was particularly impressed by a warm dessert featuring khao neow ('sticky rice') mixed with lamyai ('longan').
