June 21, 2010
RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Floods following days of heavy rain killed at least 23 people in northeast Brazil, according to figures Sunday from state officials and local press reports.

In the northeastern state of Pernambuco, civil defense authorities told AFP 10 deaths had been registered, while over 14,000 people were left homeless by the flooding.

In neighboring Alagoas state, 13 people were killed by the flooding according to local media reports, although civil defense officials were unable to immediately confirm the deaths to AFP. Some 15,500 people lost their homes in the flooding in the state.

Brazil's Minister of Cities, Marcio Fortes meanwhile said while the state had not been hit by rain, several towns were left devastated by Mundau River bursting its banks and flooding the region.

No green light for libido-boosting drug: US FDA

This photo retrieved June 18, 2010 is from http://media.photobucket.com. Women aged 30-60 mostly face the sexual desire problem whereas men's most common problem is the erectile dysfunction.

June 21, 2010
WASHINGTON (AFP) – A pink pill marketed by German drug firm Boehringer Ingelheimas a libido-booster for women has produced inconclusive results in two clinical trials, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said.

Originally intended as an anti-depressant, the drug flibanserin -- in the form of a pink pill -- began being tested years ago as a potential libido aid after women said it failed to fight the blues but did boost their sex drive.

Lack of desire is the most common sexual problem in women aged 30 to 60, just as erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual disorder among men in the same age bracket, researchers said.

Clinical trials to test flibanserin's efficacy in raising the level of sexual desire in women were held in Canada, Europe and the United States.

The results of two US trials with the drug and a placebo were published on the FDA's website: "both failed to demonstrate a statistically significant improvement on the co-primary endpoint of sexual desire," said the FDA.

"Therefore, neither study met the agreed-upon criteria for success in establishing the efficacy of flibanserin for the treatment of HSDD (hypoactive sexual desire disorder)," the administration added.

Besides the inconclusive results, the FDA noted the drug in some patients caused side effects including depression and dizzyness.

The FDA said its is waiting for recommendations on the little pink pill from an independent panel of experts due to report on Friday. The administration is not legally bound to comply with the advice, but usually does.

Boehringer Ingelhein has been researching flibanserin as a treatment for post-menopausal HSDD in women since the popular Viagra hit the market for male ED in 1998.

The potential market for a libido booster for women has been estimated by some analysts at around two billion dollars.

Medical research has found that 40 percent of women suffer from different degrees of HSDD.

Flibanserin belongs to a family of anti-depressants that acts on the body's level of serotonin, a molecule that plays a role in mood changes.

US expert frets over widening resistance to malaria drug
By Manager Online 19 June 2010 15:34
This photo retrieved June 19, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned early last year that parasites resistant to the drug artemisinin had emerged along the border between Cambodia and Thailand.

June 19, 2010
HANOI (AFP) - Resistance to new anti-malarial medication appears to be spreading beyond the western Cambodia area where it was first detected, according to a US health official.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned early last year that parasites resistant to the drug artemisinin had emerged along the border between Cambodia and Thailand.

Artemisinin-based medication has been largely credited in recent years with increasing recovery rates from the mosquito-transmitted disease that kills nearly one million people a year worldwide.

Timothy Ziemer, the US government's global coordinator against malaria, said that after first being spotted in western Cambodia in 2007, "there are now indications of artemisinin resistance in other parts of the region".

Signs of resistance to artemisinin had been found in southern Myanmar and possibly on the Chinese-Myanmar border, and in southern Vietnam near Cambodia, the retired rear admiral told a regional conference that ended Friday.

The WHO warned last year that emergence of the resistance could "seriously undermine" efforts to bring malaria under control.

Artemisinin-based medication was regarded as a replacement for older drugs that were fast becoming useless in several areas of the world as the malaria parasite developed resistance to them.

Ziemer said the number of malaria cases had still fallen. In Vietnam, for example, they were down from about 190,000 in 1991 to 15,000 by 2008, he said.

"But it is essential that national governments remain focused to contain and eventually eliminate these multi-drug resistant strains," he told the conference on international cooperation against infectious diseases.

Important to that strategy is the elimination of fake and substandard medicines, which increase resistance, he said in a speech Thursday.

Exhibition: Be Skeptical@BACC

Exhibition: Be Skeptical@BACC
UPDATE : 18 May 2010

Youthapong Charoenpan

Be Skeptical is a collection of art works produced by Thai contemporary artists Pasut Kranrattanasuit, Pitiwat Somthai, Noppadol Viroonchatapun and Suparirk Kanitwaranun.

The four artists have turned to a variety of methods in producing their work, including installations, sculpture, short film and video.

The title of the exhibition, which is being held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) would suggest that the artists recommend that people think very carefully before believing what they’re told.

Hypnotic Approach
A video installation produced by Pasut Kranrattanasuit expresses his desire to bring about new definitions of living, both from a personal and social perspective. Using a hypnotic element, the artist’s installation draws on his personal insight and experience as a way of shedding light on the subject matter.

Pitiwat Somthai demonstrates his artistic expertise, which puts the Intaglio printmaking method to great use. While Pitiwat’s work can certainly raise eyebrows, its imagery is often sufficiently powerful in itself to leave the viewer transfixed. I certainly spent a significant period of time closely examining the artist’s work. Noppadol Viroonchatapun demonstrates in his work his perceptions on several important subjects from daily life, such as society and the environment, looking at both the positives and negatives.

Noppadol’s work entitled ‘Monday’ includes an interesting installation that features a city gent’s typical daily ‘uniform’, including a shirt and necktie, trousers and briefcase. In line with the exhibition’s general concept, Noppadol’s contributions to the exhibition also seem to seek new meaning from life.

On Reflection
Through his paintings, the artist illustrates technological development within a contemporary urban environment, just as those living in these city-based environments seem to struggle for a more meaningful form of spiritual existence. I was certainly drawn towards Suparirk’s video installation.

Let’s hope that under the current circumstances such feelings can help provide greater insight and foster a desire for democratic ideas to benefit the lives of the people over the long term. Be Skeptical is located on the 7th floor of the BACC and runs through June 13. The BACC opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 9 pm. For further information, call Tel: +66 (0)2 214 6630-32, or visit http://www.bacc.or.th.

Baan Nong Khao: Weavers' Colorful Wares a Source of Civic Pride

Baan Nong Khao: Weavers' Colorful Wares a Source of Civic Pride
UPDATE : 22 June 2010

Maneeya Dhammataree

While traditional handicrafts representing ‘Thainess’ are held in great esteem, they can easily become restricted to display cabinets and lose their relevance in the modern world. But members of a community called Baan Nong Khao in Kanchanaburi province intend to ensure that their highly original patterned fabric maintains its precious cultural legacy.

A Shield From the Sun
Visitors to Kanchanaburi province may see local people wearing a colorful, traditional form of head covering, designed specifically to protect the wearer’s skin from sun damage. Resembling a kind of balaclava, the garment completely covers the head when worn, although some slits are provided that allow the wearer’s eyes, nostrils and mouth to function normally.

The most outstanding features of the head covering are its patterns and colors. Typically, they are produced in bright colors, such as blue, green, orange, purple and red. Take a closer look and you’ll see that these highly original items are made by adapting a locally-produced loincloth, which features the distinctive pattern referred to earlier.

Nationwide Recognition
I recently got the opportunity to visit the village of Baan Nong Khao, where the colorful textile is produced.

The folks from Baan Nong Khao have earned a good deal of renown nationally for their weaving skills, which they use to produce this refined form of fabric. The fabric was originally used to produce traditional loincloths, which more recently became known as Pa Khao Ma Roi See, or '100-colored loincloths'. But the textile itself is actually known as Pa Ta Jak, which derives from Ta Jak, the Thai word for zigzag.

Sixty-five-year-old Makob Buchaleoy, known as Pa ('Auntie') Makob, is the leader of the weavers at Baan Nong Khao. Wearing a traditional, Thai-style, tailored vest made from this distinctive textile, Auntie Makob described how important the cloth is among members of the local community.

Unique Appeal
Auntie Makob says she has worn traditional clothes made from Pa Ta Jak since she was a young child. During those times, her parents would only wear clothes made from the cloth at home once they had completed their regular daily farming duties. The material would only be sold to traders in the case that supplies exceeded demand.

“The fabric's most outstanding quality is that it is has a delicate, shiny look – like silk – even though it's produced using cotton thread alone,” she says.

The excellent quality of the final product is down to the skilled weavers, according to Auntie Makob. Since each thread is woven extremely tightly, this provides a high level of loom stability, ensuring that the texture is silky smooth. Another interesting feature is that the surface of the cloth features a curved surface by means of using layers of different thicknesses.

A Pragmatic Approach
At one time, members of the community were able to complete the whole process 'in house'. This included separating the fiber from the cotton seed, spinning the thread and weaving the fabric. The cotton thread spun by the weavers at Baan Nong Khao tended to be more durable than the factory-produced thread, according to Auntie Makob. Nevertheless, although the group would prefer to use handmade thread, the cost involve means that it is prohibitive, so they used factory-produced thread these days.

Pa Ta Jak was originally produced in a natural cotton color, but after some time a basic form of dyeing was introduced.

“We dyed the cloth in boiling water using the bark from an ebony tree rather than dyeing the thread beforehand,” Auntie Makob points out, adding that the bark produces a nice, rich black color.

The term '100-colored loincloth' is a more recent phenomenon, according to Auntie Makob, who says that the phrase came about once chemical dyes came to the fore. The use of multicolored threads therefore produces the colorful zigzag patterns that gave rise to the fabric's name.

Product Diversification
As Pa Ta Jak gained increasing recognition among members of the public, several new lines have been introduced, including bags, scarves and shirts. However, the community continues to recognize the importance of the fabric at a local level as it is still worn by men before and after being ordained into the monkhood, representing an important part of the religious ritual among villagers.

Transport Connections:
Car:
From Bangkok, head west on Highway 4. Shortly after reaching Nakhon Pathom, switch on to Highway 323. On reaching Kanchanaburi, take Highway 324. The village is located just off this highway and is signposted.

Greenday: Healthier Chips Inspiring 'Snack-Happy' Consumers

Greenday: Healthier Chips Inspiring 'Snack-Happy' Consumers
UPDATE : 22 June 2010

Staff Writer

Greenday successfully made its name in the highly competitive Thai snack market late last year after launching its crispy, vacuum-fried broccoli snack.

Peerapong Vongchitpinyo, Greenday's marketing manager, says the launch of the broccoli chips helped to increase sales of the company's fruit-flavored chips, produced under the same brandname, which were already available on the market.

Greenday first launched its fruit chips among a limited number of high-end stores in 2006, including banana, durian, pineapple and durian-flavored versions of the snack. The company hoped that its range of chips, produced using a unique vacuum-frying system, would challenge the deep-fried chips already available on the market.

A Healthier Variation
Peerapong says that the use of vacuum-frying technology results in a lower level of oil retention than found in deep-fried chips. He says Greenday's chips only contain about 2% oil, while deep-fried chips can contain up to 15%. The company is producing healthy snacks to serve the needs of young career women and housewives, who may enjoy eating snacks, but wish to control their nutritional and calorie intakes, according to Peerapong.

The recipes used by the company aim to provide a natural flavor and no seasonings or preservatives are used apart from a limited amount of salt to enhance the taste of the broccoli chips, Peerapong says. All fruits and vegetables used as ingredients to produce the chips are sourced from around the country through contract farms and local fruit markets, according to Peerapong.

Market Expansion
“The broccoli chips have successfully caught the attention of our target customers. Along with our marketing promotion efforts, this has generated an increase in interest in our other vacuum-fried chip products among this group,” Peerapong says, adding that Greenday had also opted to launch other new flavors of vacuum-fried chips over recent months, including jackfruit, mango and okra.

A good deal of positive feedback encouraged Peerapong to expand the market for these products and you'll now find Greenday's chips at leading department stores, outlets operated by health store chains, independent health stores and hospitals. They are also found in guest rooms' mini bars at leading luxury hotels.

Robust Demand Overseas
Peerapong says that Greenday currently exports up to 65% of its total production, with the remainder being used to satisfy local demand. While the company began exporting its chips about one year before launching in the local market, Peerapong says the company now plans to focus on developing the products locally in a bid to raise domestic sales.

The company is also planning to launch other products under other brand names in order to expand its target groups, Peerapong says, adding that the flavors of any new fruit chips would be aimed at attracting teenagers and young adults.

Greenday is already targeting high-income earners over the longer-term through its plans to offer healthier, vacuum-fried organic fruit chips, Peerapong says. Meanwhile, Greenday's fruit chips would soon be available at leading supermarkets and megastore outlets nationwide, according to Peerapong.

BRT: Bangkok by Bus 'Without the Bother'

BRT: Bangkok by Bus 'Without the Bother'
UPDATE : 22 June 2010

Nida Tunsuttiwong

To escape Bangkok's notorious traffic woes, many commuters have found some relief by turning to the BTS skytrain and MRTA subway systems as a way of traveling more smoothly and efficiently between their homes and workplaces.

Now Bangkok residents have another transport option when it comes to getting around the city following the launch by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on May 29 of its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. The idea is that this service will also encourage more people to leave their cars at home and turn to public transport in a bid to reduce transport congestion in the capital.

A Test Run
Having heard numerous negative and positive responses regarding the new service, I decided to try the BRT out for myself.

I began my journey at Chong Nonsi BTS station since this is where the BTS connects with the BRT system via a 'skywalk'. At present, the BRT is operating a pilot service until the end of the year between Sathon and Ratchapruek, which covers a distance of about 15 kilometers. Basically, if the pilot service receives a positive response from members of the public and serves to ease traffic congestion in the city, more BRT routes are likely to follow over the next couple of years.

Initially, the service is free (until August 31, 2010), then from September 1, there will be a flat rate of 10 baht (US$0.30) through until the end of the year. Progressive rates will then be applied, ranging from 12-20 baht (depending on the distance traveled), starting from January 2, 2011.

Regular Departures
On receiving a free ticket and a handbook regarding the system at the BRT station at Sathon, I head towards the air-conditioned platform area and wait for the next bus to arrive.

During peak periods (specific times yet to be confirmed), a BRT bus will depart the station every five minutes. During the off peak period, the frequency drops to one bus every 10 minutes.

The BRT station's air-conditioned platform features sliding glass doors, which are similar to the ones you may have seen on the MRT subway system. It also features a large, widescreen television, which runs reports on the whereabouts of each member of the fleet and provides an estimated time of arrival (ETA).

There's also a similar TV set on board each bus, which regularly reports on its specific location.

Room to Move
Although the BRT buses resemble regular air-conditioned buses, some people have begun to call the vehicles 'yellow buses'. While they may look similar, the interior of the BRT bus differs quite markedly. For a start, there are far fewer seats than on an ordinary air-con bus, while the driver gets his own dedicated cabin space. With fewer seats, the buses seem to be far roomier and they even have an area where people with disabilities can safely secure their wheelchairs.

Since the BRT buses run along their own dedicated bus lane, in general they can cruise at a fairly reasonable speed. Nevertheless, since the route passes through busy downtown areas, the driver was sometimes forced to stop at traffic lights, while I also spotted several cars and motorcycles infringe upon the BRT bus' lane, particularly when the vehicle was crossing a bridge. Such concerns would surely have a negative effect upon the bus' progress during rush-hour periods.

On hearing that the BRT stations would be located within a central reservation, I was initially concerned as to whether or not this would be practical for elderly passengers. Since elevators have been fitted at every station, though, I personally believe that they should be able to manage just fine. Moreover, since the platform is at the same level as the entrance to the bus, it's easy for everyone to get on or off.

The bus lane where the station is located is extremely narrow, so the driver needs to park as near to the station as possible – I would estimate this distance is about 15 centimeters. Because of this factor, the driver has to be careful and approach the station very slowly.

Cautiously Optimistic
The journey from Sathon station via the BRT service to the final stop on Ratchapruek Road took less than an hour and I have to say that, in general, I was reasonably satisfied with the service.

If I compare the service with the regular bus route that I use, I think the BRT comes out on top in almost every category. I was particularly impressed to see a security guard at every station on the BRT route, while getting on and off is also easier when using the BRT service as on my regular bus route I am often forced to get on or off in the second or third lane of traffic, which can be quite hazardous. That said, many motorists would likely disagree since they may feel that the BRT has stolen a valuable lane from them and they may even argue that it could make the traffic congestion worse.

In order to meet the needs of commuters who use the bus and motorists, the BMA needs to plan carefully when choosing its subsequent routes for the BRT bus service. In terms of the reaction on the Web, many folks seem to suggest that the BRT service is an excellent choice for commuters living in the suburbs, where there may be up to eight or 10 lanes and far fewer intersections than you find in the center of the city. From this perspective, the service will certainly help residents of the suburbs to reach downtown Bangkok more easily.

Since the construction of the BRT is far cheaper than the costs involved in extending electric train services, I think the BRT, with the assistance of good planning and management, offers great potential in helping to relieve the capital's notorious traffic jams over the long term.

Certainly the BMA appears to be taking an optimistic approach, having established a master plan that targets the establishment of 14 BRT routes in Bangkok by 2022, as follows:

1. Sathorn-Ratchapruek
2. Mochit-Civil Service Complex –Nonthaburi
3. Sathorn-Prachauthit
4. Don Muang-Minburi-Suvarnabhumi
5. Minburi-Srinagarindra-Samrong
6. Bang Na-Suvarnabhumi
7. Ram Indra-Pradit Manudham-Ekkamai
8. Phahon Yothin-Rattanakosin Somphod
9. Ratchapriek-Prannok-Phutthamonthon Sai 4
10. Suksawad-Rama II
11. Phahonyothin-Rangsit
12. Sukhaphiban 1-Lad Phrao
13. Onnut-Suvarnabhumi, and;
14. Rattanathibet-Ratchapruek

MANOKWARI, Indonesia (AFP) - A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering a localised tsunami warning and panic as people fled their homes, officials and residents said.

The quake struck at 12:16 pm (0316 GMT) about 123 kilometres (76 miles) southeast of Biak island, West Papua, officials said. It followed shortly after a 6.2-magnitude quake in the same area.

Residents of Manokwari, about 300 kilometres northwest of the epicentre, fled to open spaces as buildings swayed and the earth shook.

"There was a swaying movement for about 40 seconds. People ran out of their homes," said an AFP correspondent in the town.

There were no reports of major damage in the sparsely populated area from the quake, which the US Geological Survey measured at 7.0.

Indonesia's Geophysics and Meteorological Agency issued a local tsunami warning but the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no "Pacific-wide" wave was expected.

"If a tsunami occurs it could arrive in 10 to 15 minutes because the distance is only about 100 kilometres away," Geophysics and Meteorological Agency technical head Suharjono told AFP.

India's Muslims, Christians fight for burial rights

India's Muslims, Christians fight for burial rights

NEW DELHI (AFP) – India's teeming cities, where even the living jostle for space, are running out of room for the dead.

India's Hindus cremate their loved ones, but the country's Muslim and Christian minorities usually choose burial -- and they fear the practice is under threat.

About 185 million Indians belong to the two faiths, with census figures recording 13 percent of the population as Muslim and two percent as Christian.

Finding land for burials in urban areas is the primary problem, religious leaders say, as India's cities become ever more congested and every piece of earth is fiercely fought over.

"Go anywhere in India and see the graveyards, they are all full," said Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, chairman of the All India Imam Organisation in New Delhi. "The government has been overlooking this issue for decades."

Ilyasi said the lack of burial space is not just a problem in major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata but has spread to many small towns.

Muslims bury the dead as fast as possible, and disapprove of cremation as they believe there will be a physical resurrection on the Day of Judgement.

To meet their needs, increasing numbers of Muslims are joining together to buy small pieces of wasteland to convert into "Kabristans" -- Muslim graveyards.

Mohammed Arif, a resident of Noida on the outskirts of Delhi, purchased a government-registered plot along with his siblings and cousin in 2008.

"When my nephew died in a car crash, we struggled to get space in a graveyard in Delhi to bury him," said Arif. "We want to avoid such a crisis in future."

Indian Muslims often face widespread discrimination and live in the most densely packed, poorest parts of inner cities.

A 2008 government report on "wakf", an Arabic word for property donated permanently by Muslims for the benefit of their community, showed that 50 percent of all wakf plots across India have been encroached on.

"Government offices, hotels and schools have all been constructed and many slums are standing on wakf property," said Rehman Khan, a lawmaker who sits on the parliamentary wakf committee.

"Don't award us new land but at least give us back the land we own and we will make our own graveyards," he said.

India's relatively small Christian community -- like many of their faith around the world -- are increasingly choosing cremation over burial for reasons of both space and cost.

But Father Rebello, chairman of the Delhi Cemetery Committee, said many Indian Christians were hesitant to abandon the tradition of burial.

"Several families are turning one grave into a family grave to accommodate all the members -- at least four more can be buried in the same place," he said.

"We are suggesting families should start cremating the bodies and recently a priest in Delhi was cremated to promote it but we cannot force anyone."

The concept of family graves, or the "tier" system, where coffins are placed one above the other, originated in India in the southern state of Kerala and has slowly gained more acceptance.

Priyanka Thomas, a widow living in New Delhi who last month reluctantly chose to bury her husband in her father-in-law's grave, said the decision was inevitable.

"Myself and then my children will be buried in the same grave," she said. "It is more economical for families as they have to spend less and Christians often visit graves, so prefer burying their loved ones close to their church."

In the eastern state of Bihar, the Catholic church is asking the faithful to donate up to 60,000 rupees (1,280 US dollars) to reserve plots.

"We don?t have space for more bodies in existing graveyards," said Vincent Francis, a priest in Patna, the capital of Bihar. "The state government just won't give us more land."

Some graves in the city of Chennai have been repeatedly reopened to add more family members, said Francis Fernandes, a local priest.

"One family went into a state of shock when seeing a half-decomposed body when they were trying to place the second coffin in their family grave," he said.

Sabha Dayal, a New Delhi professor who specialises in town planning, said civil authorities had to take burial needs as seriously as any other infrastructure requirement.

"Advertisements promote new residential premises offering swimming pools and golf courses, but have you ever seen them stating that land has been allotted for cremation and burial?" asked Dayal.

"The problem is that these do not generate revenue," she said, adding the government often demolished existing graveyards to widen roads or for new commercial ventures.

About 80 percent of Indians are cremated in the Hindu fashion -- often beside a river, and with the corpse decorated with flowers and covered in ghee (clarified butter) before the skull is cracked to release the spirit.

Another death ritual in India is practised by a small community of Zoroastrian Parsis who leave their deceased on dakhmas, or "Towers of Silence", to be consumed by vultures.

But for the country's Muslims and Christians, the government offers little hope of new graveyards as urban development picks up pace.

"The shortage of graveyards stirs resentment among the minorities and can be an issue during local elections," a senior official at the Ministry of Urban Development told AFP on condition of anonymity. "In truth, these are small issues and they need to dealt with locally."
