True iPhones go upcountry

True Corporation is making its iPhone available in the previously untapped provincial market in a drive to increase sales volume by 20% this year.
The company also plans to double the number of its own-developed iPhone applications to 80 this year, with the aim of making application download services a new revenue stream.
True recently set up an application centre, allowing all smartphone users to download its tailor-made applications for free, for now.
The company's 40 current applications are among 100,000 iPhone applications worldwide. The most popular services are a Thai dictionary, WiFi-based location, True music and movies, and Premier League football coverage.
Papon Ratanachaikanont, assistant to the CEO and deputy chief commercial officer, said True was moving to expand its iPhone availability into major provinces, and expects sales to contribute up to 20% of total sales this year.
True sold 120,000 iPhones last year, all in Bangkok, exceeding the initial target of 100,000 thanks to a surge in demand for smartphones and applications. Sales revenue totalled 3 billion baht.
The company plans to spend 40 million baht this year on marketing campaign, said Mr Papon.
True's 100,000 iPhone sales enable the company to benefit from an economy of scale to introduce promotional tariff campaigns together with True Move, the mobile-phone flagship, he added.
The company plans to offer a series of bundling tariff packages and campaigns including interest-free instalments and unlimited internet access through WiFi, Edge and GPRS nationwide.
"We expect iPhone to boost average revenue per subscriber for True Move, especially postpaid customers," said Mr Papon.
True also plans to trim its iPhone handset price this year with attractive promotional tariffs to draw customers.
