Quite a few people use notebooks as their major and first computer. If that is the case with you, and you keep the notebook plugged in all the time to the power line, then there is no need for the expensive battery to be in the notebook. A lot of people will ask if keeping the battery in while on electricity will damage it. While it will not damage the battery, it certainly is unnecessary.
In situations where you will never use the notebook battery, such as when it is more-or-less docked permanently, just remove the battery. The notebook runs just perfectly without the battery, and by taking away the battery, you will keep it in perfect condition for when you do need it. Sometimes people will think that if you remove the battery, that will ruin it over time as it runs down, goes dead and sits.
To store the notebook battery when it is not in use, put it in a non-metallic (or non-conducting) storage container. Keep it in a dry and cool place. Eventually, the battery will drain, but that is just the way mother-nature works. So if the battery has been in container for a while, do not be startled if it is dead when you use it. You can recharge the battery simply by inserting it into your notebook. It should work properly if you have taken the necessary precautions to store it correctly.
If you do take your wall-bound notebook out on the road, then I recommend not eliminating the battery. Nothing will happen to it by having it inserted in your computer. Instead, each week or so, unplug the notebook and let the battery cycle. That keeps your battery reliable and healthy over the long haul.
Of course, there may be a few notebooks that can not run from a power outlet when the battery is removed. his is something that was actually a problem on a few of the older notebooks, but in today's world where everything runs independently, that is no longer an issue. If you think this might be a problem, simply keep your battery inside the notebook and know that if you do not cycle your battery every so often, it will eventually go bad.
If you take away the battery, do consider securing the laptop in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The notebook's battery acts as a tiny UPS, keeping the notebook powered during short outages and brownouts. If you take away the battery, consider buying a UPS as an investment - just as you would for a desktop.
All in all, batteries are those things that if you take care of them. they will more than likely never let you down. If they're dead, just recharge them and keep going. Change the battery when it goes bad which is incredibly obvious and easy to detect. Essentially, the battery will hold its charge an incredibly short period of time. When that begins to happen, it is time for a new one. With the new notebook computers, that's a snap.
