While it's certainly easy enough to find a nice hotel near Phuket's Patong Beach, it's rather more difficult to find one within the 'budget' price bracket, assuming we exclude the rather seedier properties. During my recent visit to the resort island, I checked into a newly opened property called the Arimana Hotel, which actually proved to be a bit of a find. The six-story building includes 49 standard rooms, each boasting a huge balcony area offering views of Patong Hill. While the hotel's swimming pool is on the small side, it's still rather lovely, while the experience overall felt more akin to staying in an island resort than a budget hotel.
One big advantage of staying at the Arimana Hotel is its prime location, which allows guests to reach Patong Beach in about 15 minutes. There are also plenty of interesting nightlife opportunities nearby, while the newly renovated Jungceylon Shopping Complex is just a five-minute stroll away for those looking to do some shopping during their stay. During my recent visit, the weather was actually pretty unpredictable – at times it was unseasonably hot, while it also rained for a spell despite the fact that it was still supposed to be the cool season. Value-driven proposition Phuket enjoyed a boom period when it became a center for tin mining, but it is mass tourism these days that dictates its fortunes. This has led in recent years to extremely intensive competition with growing numbers of hotel properties looking to get in on the act. Arimana Hotel, it would seem, has managed to create a new niche - offering a relatively high degree of comfort at a very affordable rate. During the low season (May 1-October 31), it was possible to secure a standard room at Arimana Hotel for just 1,090 baht (US$32). Now that it's peak season, the current room rate is still very reasonable at 2,000 baht per night. These rates include American breakfast. Personal touch The staff at the Arimana Hotel were extremely courteous, offering a helpful and professional approach on all matters relating to service. On asking a member of staff about the island's famous cumin-marinated grilled chicken, she kindly drew me a map to help me locate her favorite street stall. It turned out that the chicken was very tasty, so her personal recommendation turned out to be an extremely good one, which I much appreciated.
