Exporting PDFs

I followed your advice on migrating to OpenOffice, it is free and it is now the only word processing program available at commercial Internet shops.
I have a research book, a translation of a Song Dynasty verse, thusly using Chinese characters.
I have found no problem with ODT and DOC or TXT output files.
There is a notable degradation of font weight quality - light weight in the PDF files. My searches on the Internet mentioned something to do with fixed fonts and that someone may, may not know etc, etc, but the problem is still unfixed.
I note that sometimes the PDF files display an error message: 114?? with usually the first one or two pages being blank but with the remainder being readable.
Sometimes by toying with the ODT content, to ensure that nothing goes over the margins, can correct this, or transferring the ODT content to a text-editor then transferring everything into a new ODT page will correct it; and sometimes nothing that I have imagined corrects this.
Any ideas?
The problem with having two tech gurus is that I don't know which one to praise first.

Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: The ability to export PDF files directly from OpenOffice is one of the nice features of this freeware. However, that doesn't mean that it will work perfectly every time, unfortunately.
I have not had a problem with OpenOffice-produced PDFs in my own testing. However, if you are not getting the quality you want, I suggest you install a PDF printer, and use this alternative method to produce PDF files. Such programs give you far more control over the output of the PDF than the word processor.
There are several free PDF printers available. I have settled for quite some time on Primo PDF. Once you install it on your computer, you will see a new option when you tell OpenOffice to print - and that option is to print to a file using Primo PDF. The program is available at http://www.primopdf.com.
Downloading torrents
I have been using isohunt and utorrent but downloaded Bit Che as per your recommendation. How do I actually get it to start downloading once I open it?
PS I tried to find a help website unsuccessfully.
IAN
Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: Bit Che is only a torrent finder, not a downloader. It will help you locate torrents, and take you to the website where you can download the torrent. Once you download the torrent, you must use a program such as utorrent to download the file, using the torrent. Here is the procedure you would normally use.
Use Bit Che to search for a torrent, much as you would use Google. When Bit Che finds a torrent that sounds good, clock on it, and you will to the website where the torrent is stored. You then either download and open that torrent, or open it directly, as previously.
Kindle search
Where can I buy a Kindle DX in Bangkok?
BRANDY
Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: Brandy, there is no authorised Kindle shop in Thailand, and I have not seen or heard of anyone selling "grey market" versions of the machine so far. I'm sure there soon will be, and you can find second-hand Kindles already on eBay and so on.
For now, for a "legal" new Kindle, you can only order online, from Amazon.com directly. On its main page, Amazon features the Kindle. Click on Order Now. When the order page appears, look for the box that says "Live outside the US?" and click on the provided link for more information, including on Thailand.
You will have to use a credit card, and ship or mail to Thailand. There is no way to tell what the Customs Department might (or might not) do when the device arrives. Thailand is already set up for Kindle users to buy books from Amazon in seconds.
Lost emails
I used to save my project-associated emails on my computer hard drive and back them up onto a partitioned external hard drive. Last May the computer hard drive was removed and changed by a repair shop in Mexico where I was working at the time and the data was lost.
I wasn't too concerned at this as I had also backed up the emails onto an external hard drive. However, recently the partitioned part of the external hard drive that had my saved emails on it became somehow corrupted and the part containing the emails cannot be opened.
I have been told that all the emails will still be on a server somewhere.
My question to you is, Would it be possible for me to recover all my emails dating back to the beginning of Sept 2007 from Hotmail?
If yes, how do I set about to recover the electronic-mails? Would I have to contact Hotmail?
JOHN M McCRICKARD
Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: I'm sorry to hear about your data loss. I don't know the exact policies of Hotmail, but unless you have a special (paid) account with them, I doubt you will find all your old mail in there. (This could be an advert for Gmail, by the way, where all your mail is kept unless you specifically delete it.)
I sincerely doubt that contacting Hotmail will motivate them to go back through their own backups, even if they have them. Of course, it never would hurt to ask their support staff.
Your real, and only viable, chance is to go into Hotmail and search your entire account folders, especially the Sent Mail one. After that, only a data-recovery project by very expensive experts might be able to rescue your currently damaged hard drive.
Unwanted installer
When starting Microsoft Excel, Windows Installer screen pops up and Windows starts a configuration of Windows Professional XP. After three times cancellation it disappears and Excel starts.
OTTO
Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: The dreaded Windows Installer pop-up problem got so bad, and spread so far and wide, that Microsoft was actually forced to provide service for it. Unfortunately, Microsoft did half a fix. You can try it. Go to this Microsoft "Help and Support" website and download the Installer CleanUp Utility. It may resolve your program.
If it does not, the next thing to do is to get another copy of Windows Installer and, well, install it on top of the one you have. A lot of people report this works. One place you can get a copy is at tinyurl.com/s4foe.
Still have a problem? Try to (gently) run a registry cleanup. The program CCleaner, often reviewed and mentioned in these pages, is pretty good. You can find and download it from http://www.ccleaner.com.
