Nida Tunsuttiwong The Springfield Group is well-known for Springfield Royal Country Club, its world-class golf course, which was designed by US golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. The group also owns and operates three luxury resorts located between the coastal towns of Hua Hin and Cha-Am – Springfield Village Golf & Spa, Springfield Beach Resort and Springfield@Sea Resort & Spa. Sumet Indamara, managing director of the Springfield Group, says the group started out 19 years ago with the intention of establishing a truly world-class golf course. A majestic setting Recognizing the strong potential offered by Cha-Am district, which is actually located in Phetchaburi province, the group invited Nicklaus to design an 18-hole course on a plot covering 2,500 rai (400 hectares) in Huay-Sai Nua sub district. Cha-Am district is a particularly attractive area since it is includes both coastal and mountainous terrain. A further nine holes were added to the course, which add to the challenge and entertainment value for visiting golfers. Sumet admits that Springfield Village is still in the process of developing its identity and selling points. While golfers are the main target group, the majority of guests tend to be incentive groups, or groups on company trips from small or large corporations, such as the Siam Cement Group. In line with this development, Springfield is investing in facilities that will allow corporate customers to engage in team-building activities, such as rock climbing, along with other forms of sporting or leisure pursuits. The latest facilities will be ready in a matter of months, according to Sumet. With regard to the group’s two other properties, Sumet says Springfield Beach Resort has 77 luxury rooms and provides a perfect hideaway for families, while Springfield@Sea Resort & Spa, which opened two years ago, has become the group’s most popular resort, particularly among young professionals and young couples. Sumet says the group’s three properties form an integrated accommodation solution, which answers the needs of various customer segments. Overall, each property offers guests a comfortable and pleasant setting in which to truly relax, along with plenty of activities for those guests who prefer to keep busy. On the group’s marketing and promotions strategies, Sumet says Springfield has co-sponsored several major events held at its properties. In December 2009, Springfield@Sea Resort & Spa was chosen as the venue to host The Chill Band on the Beach, which was organized by a well-known Thai radio station. Earlier this month, Singha Corporation held another major music event called Singha Frappe Music Fiesto 2010 at Springfield Village Golf & Spa. The event included local and foreign musicians and bands. According to Sumet, most foreign tourists visiting Cha-Am and Hua Hin are return visitors, who only use Bangkok as a transportation hub. So long as transport infrastructure is operating efficiently, they rarely take the political situation into account, he says. In terms of the development of the property sector in Cha-Am and Hua Hin, Sumet says the destinations have developed a good reputation over a long period of time for their pleasant neighborhoods and clean beaches. Since Klai Kang Won Palace is located in Hua Hin, both Hua Hin and Cha-Am are expected to provide visitors with a clean and peaceful environment. The summer palace is used by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and members of the Royal family. Sumet says he doesn’t expect any more so-called 'face-changing' developments to be built around the two towns, although every year there’s a steady supply of new accommodation options opening. In addition, Sumet says he expects Springfield Group’s resort and others operated by other leading hotel chains to enjoy steady, sustainable growth for years to come thanks to the area’s unique characteristics.
