May 24, 2010
BANGKOK (AFP) - Thailand's criminal court will rule Tuesday on whether to issue a warrant to arrest fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra on terrorism charges in connection with deadly street rallies, officials said.

Department of Special Investigations (DSI) chief Tharith Pengdit said his agency, tasked with investigating violence surrounding the anti-government "Red Shirt" demonstrations, had submitted evidence on Thaksin's involvement.

"The court has questioned three witnesses from DSI, and the DSI also submitted two more files of evidence which show Thaksin's coordinating role," Tharith told reporters Monday.

The government has accused Thaksin, a billionaire tycoon ousted in a 2006 coup, of bankrolling and masterminding Thailand's worst political violence in recent history which has left 88 dead since the Reds' rallies erupted in March.

Thaksin lives in exile to avoid a jail sentence for corruption, but the government has exerted pressure on countries he has visited and moved to freeze his finances.

Terrorism charges carry a maximum penalty of death in Thailand, but the warrant appears aimed at boosting attempts to extradite Thaksin who has found sanctuary in several countries.

Defence lawyer Thanadej Puangpool told reporters the court refused his objection to the terrorism charges, ruling that his power of attorney does not apply to the case.

"We still have the right to appeal. The court has refused to receive our objection request. We will seek a new power of attorney which we believe will be done in one week," Thanadej said.

Thaksin is idolised by many Reds for his populist policies, including cheap healthcare and village funds, but Thai elites see him as corrupt, authoritarian and a threat to the revered monarchy.

Thaksin's image featured on T-shirts, banners and headbands worn by Reds during the two months of rallies crushed in an army offensive Wednesday, but opinion is divided on how much control he now exerts over the movement.

Sex toys for women of Uruguay

Sex toys for women of Uruguay

by Leila Macor, May 24, 2010
MONTEVIDEO (AFP) – In a living room in Uruguay, a group of women ranging from their mid-teens to their late-fifties gather around a red suitcase, in eager anticipation of the goodies within.

They are not disappointed: The valise holds a breathtaking array of sensual lotions and aromatic potions designed to arouse the female libido -- usually an afterthought in this traditional country not particularly known for being sexually adventurous.

The suitcase also holds a treasure trove of risque toys for the adult woman at play -- some fairly mild in sexual tone, others bawdy enough to make a sailor blush.

The items on sale include fur-covered handcuffs, a bath sponge with a vibrator discreetly tucked inside, and an array of intimate apparel more notable for where the fabric isn't, than where it is.

Such racy ware has long been familiar in the United States and Europe, but sexual liberation was a long time coming in buttoned-up Uruguay, an insular Catholic country of conservative tastes.

Elsewhere in the world, the female market has been a major driver of the multi-billion-dollar sex toy industry. Here, women are just becoming comfortable with the notion that it is all right to acknowledge and satisfy their erotic urges.

Which is where the two owners of the flourishing sex toy franchise La Maleta Roja, or The Red Suitcase in English, come in.

Entrepreneurs Nicole Komin and Gabriela Perez say their product line aims to show women not merely how to please the men in their lives, but how to pleasure themselves.

And in this country with still prudish inclinations, the entire transaction happens in private, behind closed doors and among friends.

Perez said that even if they don't always make the sale, they succeed in something equally important: opening women's minds and helping them become more comfortable with their own bodies.

"That is something that we always achieve -- making them think and evaluate where they are with their own sexuality," she said.

The duo have run their business since November, and also are in charge of opening new franchises throughout Central and South America.

Maleta Roja is an outpost of a Spanish company which has attained a global reach, peddling sensual wares to women across Europe and now poised to conquer Latin America.

Inviting a vendor into one's home for a private party to display and demonstrate her products is a sales approach that has been used frequently to sell cosmetics and food storage containers.

But it also is proving to be the perfect way to sell sex items in Uruguay, a country of just some 3.4 million inhabitants nestled between Argentine and Brazil, which is a perfect laboratory to test the appeal of the merchandise.

The country's small size "allows us to make mistakes without killing the brand -- without there being major negative repercussions," Komin said.

And Perez said that Uruguay's "conservative facade" has turned out to be a plus in many ways.

"Uruguay can be seen as a mirror of the rest of the conservative society in Latin America," said Perez, who with her business partner not only runs the franchise here, but has sold others in El Salvador and Puerto Rico, with Bolivia and Panama soon to follow.

Part of their sales pitch is in instructing the uninitiated on how to use the sex gadgets and products, as the women cluster around, peppering them with questions.

"Oh -- that's how you use that!" is a commonly heard refrain.

There has also been some head-scratching around the use of the top-selling chocolate-flavored edible massage oil. The women are instructed to blow on the oil once applied to the skin to warm it slightly and then -- bon appetit! -- lick it up.

"Blowing is not party of my erotic vocabulary," one reluctant customer quipped, as she nevertheless followed the directions.

All the experimentation is part of a larger trend said, noted sexologist Maria Luisa Banfi, who said that the Latin American woman "is on the cusp of slowly liberating herself."

"The women of today are not limited by anything" with respect to her sexuality, compared to earlier generations, she said.

The only regret with all this new found sexual adventure, said one octogenarian customer at a recent gathering, is that "unfortunately we didn't have this 20 years ago."

This photo retrieved May 25, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. Yahoo! has acquired Koprol, an Indonesian Internet service, allowing subscribers to use mobile telephones to instantly tap into nearby people and places.

May 25, 2010
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Yahoo! late Monday announced that it has acquired Koprol, an Indonesian Internet service that lets people use mobile telephones to instantly tap into nearby people and places.

"Users are increasingly relying on mobile devices to communicate and access the Internet and they are looking for seamless integration between those devices and PCs," said Rose Tsou, senior vice president, Asia Region at Yahoo!.

"Koprol was uniquely designed for mobile phones and within a year has already built a strong user base."

Yahoo! planned to use its global presence to introduce Jakarta-based Koprol to other parts of the world. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Koprol lets people "check-in" to locations using Web browsers on mobile phones and then see which other users are nearby and what they are doing, in a fashion similar to US location-based social networks Foursquare and Gowalla.

Koprol users can share tips, reviews, pictures or other information in real-time with other users in proximity.

Koprol provides tips about local businesses, such as popular shops or restaurants, based on user ratings including a "thumbs-up" feature that elevates favored places to the tops of the rankings.

Users of the service can also start or join discussions based on particular locations and invite friends to participate.

"We are excited to join Yahoo! and look forward to the opportunities being part of a global Internet leader presents," said Koprol co-founder Fajar Budiprasetyo.

"This is a great success story for the online community in Indonesia and demonstrates that innovation is recognized wherever it occurs."

Shopping for love in Vietnam's mountains

Shopping for love in Vietnam's mountains
By Manager Online 27 May 2010 15:02
This photo retrieved May27, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. Vietnamese people can meet their ex-lovers at the so-called love market. Lau Minh Pao was there to meet his ex-lover, having to wait until next year due to a downpour on the 27th day of the third lunar month.

By Nguyen Van Vinh, May 27, 2010
KHAU VAI, Vietnam (Reuters Life!) – Once a year, with his wife's blessing, Lau Minh Pao gets to have a guilt-free tryst with his ex.

Their rendezvous' have played out more like strolls down memory lane than salacious flings, but they are part of a treasured tradition in this mountainous corner of northern Vietnam that may challenge some more linear concepts of love.

"In the past, we were lovers, but we couldn't get married because we were far apart," Pao simply as he waited for his date on a dark night in the village of Khau Vai in Ha Giang province.

Now when they meet, he said, "we pour our hearts out about the time when we were in love."

They are not alone.

For two days each year, on the 26th and 27th of the third month of the lunar calendar, the tiny village of Khau Vai, strung along a saddle in the lush hills near China, is transformed into a "love market."

Hundreds of members of Giay, Nung, Tay, Dzao, San Chi, Lo Lo and Hmong hill tribes, among others, trek in from across the mountainous districts nearby to attend.

Pao's wife was there, too, meeting her old flame.

Some travel for days, even from neighboring provinces.

This year, local artists in colorful clothing performed the local myth telling the story of the origin of the Khau Vai love market.

The love market village of Khau Vai is seen from the top of a mountain in Vietnam's northern Ha Giang province, 500 km. (310 mi) north of Hanoi May 9, 2010. REUTERS/Kham
Legend has it an ethnic Giay girl from Ha Giang province fell in love with an ethnic Nung boy from the neighboring province of Cao Bang.

The girl was so beautiful that her tribe did not want to let her marry a man from another tribe and a bloody conflict ensued between the two tribes.

Watching tragedy unfold before them, the two lovers sorrowfully decided to part ways to avoid further bloodshed and to restore peace.

But to keep their love alive they made a secret pact to meet once a year on the 27th day of the third lunar month in Khau Vai. Thereafter, the hill village became known as a meeting place for all of those in love.

These days, the tradition is carried on, albeit with a modern edge.

Giggling girls in native headdresses make dates by text message on their cell phones, and hold them up to snap digital photos of performances.

New roads have made the village that lies some 500 km (310 miles) north of Hanoi more accessible. In the Nung language, Khau Vai means 'clouds among the mountains'.

"The young generation now go out together, and find each other, and it is more modern, freer and clearer. Back in the old days, our grandparents had to pursue love in secret, not like today," 23-year-old Hua Thi Nghi an ethnic Giay.

Under the dark sky, as other couples cavorted nearby, Pao was looking forward to seeing his old girlfriend.

"We've arranged to meet and she'll be here a little bit, around 10 pm. We meet together to re-tell the tale of how it was when we were in love back then," he said.

The next day, however, he said their meeting had been cut short by a downpour.

But there's always next year.

An alternative image of the kingdom

An alternative image of the kingdom

  • Published: 13/05/2010 at 12:00 AM
  • Newspaper section: Outlook

Thailand's image at the moment in the minds of foreigners is hardly of the exotic splendour of golden temple spires and white sandy beaches. The political turmoil of the past few months has made them do a quick U-turn and head for some other exotic destination, while expats in Thailand grit their teeth in despair at how low the country has sunk.

"How do you see Thailand?" is an art exhibition that brings an alternative view of this country by a group of artists based in Geneva, Switzerland. Curated by Swiss-educated Thai artist Siripoj Chamroenvidhya, the exhibition brings together a range of styles and techniques by these artists who have had varying degrees of contact with Thailand.

Swiss artist Jacques Berthet has probably spent the most time in this country, and brings a selection of photographs that reflect the juxtaposition and contrasts of a sprawling metropolitan city that pique his interest: The orchid gardens, the religious temples, the buildings and expressways, the pollution that is part of the city yet offers a certain charm that he has tried to convey. Billboards that dominate the skyline particularly strike his eye, as seen in Bangkok 15/7/2007, which shows a squatter's hut by a railway track overwhelmed by an enormous advertising billboard featuring a beautiful Western woman. You couldn't get a bigger contrast than that.

Belgian artist Axelle Snakkers draws on her experience living in Kanchanaburi, with water as the main motif of her six oil on aluminium paintings and six crayon on paper drawings. The abstract images featuring fluid vertical brushstrokes on metal represent anything from the river, the coastal landscape, the horizon and the rain to the three elements of earth, river and sky.

Ladina Gaudenz combines blurred images with the format of a film strip, bringing to mind the fleeting images of a strange and unknown land that draws you into its mystery yet distances you by the cultural and linguistic divide.

There is a large selection of works, almost a retrospective, by the late noted artist Bujar Marika, who plays on the intrinsic Swiss concept of time in his various installations. Thai Nympheas uses a cluster of round wall clocks deprived of faces, painted into the colours of the lotus blossoms that evoke Monet's water lily series. His clever use of quartz clocks that do not keep time is an apt and humorous reflection of the chaotic lifestyle that is Bangkok where there is no evident rhyme or reason yet somehow life evolves and functions.

US artist June Papineau presents Vital Signs, an installation that looks like a rain shower from afar but is actually tiny tubes filled with grains of rice hanging from the ceiling in two concentric circles. Alder leaves, catkins and strobili are interspersed with the strands of rice, reflecting the cycle of traditional rice farming where the common alder plant can be used to replenish the soil instead of the burning of rice stalks that create so much pollution. It is a comment on sustainable farming and agriculture, environmental preservation and the need to go back to traditional practice.

Curator Siripoj presents his Doi Tung series, which was previously presented in Geneva. His Untitled (Golden Triangle) uses synthetic paint on bubble wrap, a highly unlikely material to paint on. The texture and technique offers totally different feelings when you see the paintings up close and from afar.

Supported by the Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council, 'How do you see Thailand?' is at the National Gallery Bangkok until May 27.

Silver 'Sarakadee' celebration

Silver 'Sarakadee' celebration

  • Newspaper section: Muse

After turning the stories of people and cultural artefacts into hundreds of features printed in 300 issues in the past 25 years, there is a lot for Sarakadee (Feature) magazine to talk about. The magazine is now celebrating its silver celebration with a photo exhibition of the past 25 years of Thailand at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre until May 30. An extensive collection of photographs taken by its photographers are being exhibited along the hallways of the third and fourth floor of the centre. The collection does not only feature great photography techniques but also local wisdom, environmental situations and social issues. They are also the tokens of our history from several important events including Royal events and political incidents. A photo rally will be held today, searching for the photographer that can best capture the right moment of Bangkok within 25 hours. The winners will be announced tomorrow, with the winning pieces exhibited alongside professional works by Sarakadee photographers. Although the competition is not open to the public, everyone can enjoy the perspective of the city through the eyes of others.

Origami artist Ekkasit Khemnguad explains that the craft has a range of applications, from recreational and educational to commercial and industrial

After showing off a complete origami crane, Ekkasit Khemnguad unfolds the paper and creates a rabbit out of the same piece of paper. Then unfolding the rabbit, he pauses and stares at the paper again, thinking of the next figure to create. "We work like an architect in a way," says Ekkasit, who calls himself an origami artist and leads the Thai Origami Club.

To create an origami piece, the technique varies from one artist to another. Some sketch the numerous lines on the paper before starting to fold it. "But I sketch my work with numerous creases, not drawings."

Looking at a square piece of paper, a veteran origami artist can easily turn it into the desired shape by calculating the space at each corner of the paper for different parts and limbs of the figure, be it a dragonfly, a dinosaur or a lady with a violin.

But for an easy figure like a fish, Ekkasit simply imagines a fish and calculates the space of the paper - all in his mind. It's a matter of experience. A few minutes later, the same piece of paper that was once a crane and a rabbit has now been transformed into a fish.

As a five-year-old boy whose family couldn't afford expensive toys, Ekkasit was taught to play with pieces of paper and his imagination, and he once submitted a dinosaur in art class instead of a simple crane like the others. The 28-year-old postgraduate student has been a part-time origami workshop instructor since high school. His mother works at The Japan Foundation, allowing him perfect access to origami.

However, professional origami isn't widely recognised. Unlike in Japan or several Western countries where origami counts as a real profession, "the art is still considered a toy in Thai society", says Ekkasit, who now earns a fair amount from being a workshop instructor and building commercial solutions for advertising agencies.

The term origami - from ori meaning folding and kami meaning paper - may sound unfamiliar to a lot of Thais. "We've been folding banana leaves," points out Ekkasit. The paper bags used by street sellers are a type of origami.

Although Ekkasit can't think of how origami can be applied at the industrial level for Thailand, it has been widely applied to many industries worldwide. Origami is not only a part of packaging design, it is also largely used as a model, showing how a tool works in aerospace and medical experiments while the creases show what a piece of fabric might become.

In a simpler version, the art can easily become an affordable educational tool. Without mathematics, different folds tell different degrees of angles. Different steps of folding allow practitioners to learn about logic; a complete figurine is only a result of all steps from beginning to end combined, despite the fact that all steps do not need to be done in chronological order. Switching the order, however, is only for advanced practitioners.

A novice starts from a simple model with the fewest limbs and parts. Like novice musicians playing other people's compositions by decoding those notes, Ekkasit explains origami beginners decode the complicated creases of figures created by professional artists. "The ultimate goal is to create your own compositions."

In a recent advertising piece for a bank in which Ekkasit made a fish out of a dollar note, he had to readjust the folding process. His experience taught him how to transform the rectangular banknote into a fish. An origami figure is only a result of one piece of paper without cutting or gluing.

New origami is usually an improvisational process during work. The late Akira Yoshizawa pioneered several techniques including popular wet-folding and making thick pieces of paper look softer; while advanced origami master Satoshi Kamiya invented a rope action technique to make the physical joints of his figurines look real, round and moveable.

Ekkasit recently created his own version of Hanuman and Ganesh, which had never been created by any artist before. Apart from a collection of his favourite dinosaurs with different gestures, the origami artist plans to create another collection of characters from Thai literature like the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Ramayana epic. "I want to create something unique and Thai."

The well known pandas.

Travelling In Thailand....By Train!

Travelling In Thailand....By Train!

It’s been quite a bit of fun writing up this ‘Travelling in Thailand series and for the forth and final part I just had to write up a whole blog on the unmistakable Thai Train.

During this series I didn’t even mention ‘motorbike-taxis’ - probably cause I am in the habit of writing about them quite a lot anyway! And how about the ‘car’, sorry - but such a boring form of getting from A to B shall have to wait for a new series! Then what about the horse, elephant or even buffaloω Guess I shall have to find some space to fit them into another blog sometime.
I hate to say it, but in the eyes of the Thais, the train is a ‘last resort’ when it comes down to ‘transportation preference’! Just ask any old Thai what they think about the state of Thailand’s trains and you’ll hear a flurry of remarks along the lines of “Darned slow”, “Crummy service” and “Never on time”. Guess they aren’t far off the truth! Since the Thailand’s train system is ‘a government service’ the state officials employed to run the things aren’t in the habit of working their guts off for a pittance wage. Every branch of Thailand’s government is renowned for its civil servants who hate being called ‘servants’ and instead feel that they are doing the public a favour and ought to be respected forthwith.

Thailand’s old train service has certainly gone down-hill over the years but it is still the best mode of transport to really see and feel the country! A bus up to Chiang Mai may take 9 hours but the blessed train plods along in no rush whatsoever and does the distance in 12 (if you’re lucky that is!). But what a great way to go! Sat on the upcountry bus you’ll be bored stiff with a TV blaring away in front showing some corny quack-wack Chinese soap opera, then for a view from the window you’ll be seeing nothing but huge billboards erected along the road, just waiting to fall over… (on a motorcyclists head). The train however, offers you some excellent views of the Thai countryside and its paddy fields, farming families and water buffaloes. Then in the morning you’ll be waking up to some gorgeous sunrise. Not having to just plonk yourself in the seat all evening, the upcountry train provides passengers with a groovy restaurant. Though the prices are rather over the top, you’ll have the opportunity to meet a whole variety of characters and especially other Thai state officials (they get a discount on train travel) hoping to practice their English with some foreigner. Thailand’s civil servants are famed for a few things and besides just laziness, they are; playing cards for a few baht (under the table of course!) and drinking whisky like there was no tomorrow.

If you fancy ordering some beers on the Thai night train it is advised to flash a bitta Thai lingo and pretend you know the score as employees on the train are synonymous for ‘over-charging’ beer-swigging Farangs. I remember the last time I took a train up to Chiang Mai and got into conversation with some banana-shake-backpackers and a few Thai army boys returning home. The backpackers had supped up all their beer and when they asked the waitress for the bill, I was surprised at the cost of a large beer – 100 baht! Not expecting to pay that much for a darned beer, I asked for my bill only for the waitress to reply, “That will be 160 baht for two bottles please”. Glad to be paying the Thai price, I sat back down and had one more!

Just ask any of the train officials and they all have a stock of nauseatingly bad stories about ‘Farangs!’ and for some strange reason, ‘drunk ones’ especially. There was the true story of a pack of Farangs from Europe a couple of years back who had been partying it up on Koh Samui over the new year. Getting on the train, the officials in charge ordered them to ‘control their alcohol consumption on the train’ as they were already smelling to the heavens and being loud-mouthed. Failing to heed the advice of the train officials they continued drinking their supply of alcohol which they had brought along with them, stuffed in their bags. They were warned too of standing in the gangways and opening up the door to have a smoke. Anyway, the story goes that around midnight one of the guy’s girlfriends starts running up and down the isles screaming at the top of her voice for the train to stop. Her boyfriend had simply disappeared after the last time he had popped out for a cigarette and…….. fallen off the train. Quite a lot of negative publicity was given to this story and especially about the quality of the Farangs heading to Koh Samui these days! You have been warned!

My favourite train route just has to be the Isarn (north-eastern) one that runs from Korat (Nakhorn Ratchasima) to Ubol Ratchathani on the Thai/Khmer/Laos border. I’ve done the route twice now stopping off every day at a new town like Surin, Buriram and Sisaket. The train is nearly always late but it’s darned cheap, incredibly slow and full of north-eastern locals speaking their local Khmer or Isarn dialects while pigging away on grilled chicken, papaya-bok-bok and sticky rice. For friendless it’s hard to beat the Isarn folk and you’ll soon be asked to help consume their lunch with a few glasses of whiskey. Even for me, the folks are as nice as can be but actually understanding what they are saying is a different kettle of fish! Try the route you won’t be disappointed!

The train is also the place to eat! The upcountry chug-along day-train is a haven for vendors coming on to the train trying to sell you a whole variety of food from the likes of dried squid to grilled meat balls. The for some weird reason, whenever a ‘drinks lady’ spots a male Farang she automatically sticks a can of Beer Chang in his face as if he lived on the stuff! Countryside train stations are quiet places run by some station-master who does virtually nothing the whole day long but watch TV, eat, drink, gossip with some friends and occasionally water the flowers. Fine job – his only responsibility in life is to wave the train past – twice a day!

When I first came to Suphanburi I had to go buy a ticket for the Bangkok-Penang train at the station here. Now, half the locals here don’t even realize the town has a train station! Arriving at the station, it took me 10 minutes of looking around to actually find someone who was working! I finally found the station-master sat under a tree outside, again drinking whiskey with some buddies of is! He seemed pretty perplexed when I explained that I needed to book a ticket to go to Penang, I think his first words were “Are you sure, we have a train that goes to Malaysia!ω’ It next takes the guy another 10 minutes to turn on his computer, another 10 to call up a colleague in Nakhorn Pathom province to find out the code for the Penang/Butterworth train and finally another 10 to print out a ticket, I mean the mechanism looked older than him!

Talking about the Bangkok-Penang (Butterworth) train, now that’s the funkiest train Thailand has to offer! Funny to listen to the ‘tanoy’ when the train is approaching the station (I always take the train at the Samsen station instead of Hualumpong) “Passengers pls get ready for boarding, the International Butterworth train is approaching” makes it sound like you were at the airport! That is one heck of a train though and a bargain and a half, at something like…. eleven hundred baht! Very recommended!

If you are a newbie to Thai trains and fancy the idea of taking one, it is advised to book well in advance (if it’s a long distance one). Absolutely no need to go to the main train station you can book a ticket at any old station in Thailand – they are all computerized these days. If you want to take a really long distance one, like to say Hat Yai or Penang I suggest you take along some sandwiches drinks etc.
