Local fashion collective Bangkok Fashion Society reveals the tastes of the coming summer season

As you feel a drop of sweat creeping down the back of your blouse you put on seconds ago, and even before you manage to finish applying foundation during your morning grooming routine, you know that summer is coming to town. And once again it's time for hot, hot heat and beaches and blue sea. In fashion, it's a time for floaty blouses, floral prints, nautical stripes and of course, bikinis!
To give Thai fashionistas a taste of what's to come, the Bangkok Fashion Society last week premiered its latest offerings, which will hit stores in about two weeks to select members of the press. Okay, we're talking about summer here, which is surely coming soon. We can't really wait for the European snow to melt or it'd be the rainy season here already!
Held at H1, Thong Lor, the event is themed "Think Global Dress Local" and hand-picks key summer trends as a guideline for showing how Thai designs can be mixed and matched while keenly noting the global fashion trends. Be it from nature, folk or romantic grunge to graphic lines and shapes, rest assure that all seven brands showcasing their items at the event will have them at hand for your viewing pleasure.
DISAYA
Those who were surprised by Disaya's more mature, less quirky take on fashion in her previous autumn/winter ``Celestial Warrior'' collection now have confirmation that the brand is sure-footed in bringing this clothing label known for young and youthful naughtiness into a new fashion dimension. The glam rock look of the previous collection paved the way for a new goth and bandage fetishism and Disaya's S/S 10 is all about slashed and torn fabrics, straps and excessive zippers on summer's staples such as blouses, tea-dresses, cardigans and playsuits in sheer summer fabrics including silk satin, silk crepe de chin and silk ottoman.
The form remains very feminine, and yes, we mean feminine not girlish, which means lots of straight, tulip and pencil skirts as well as dresses in a palette ranging from pink, coral and apricot to Maya blue and light green.
THEATRE
After celebrating the brand's 25 years of glory on the fashion scene, Theatre joins the Bangkok Fashion Society and premiers its latest summer collection that simply invokes a summer escapade to the sand, sea and sun in casual summer-like fabrics such as cotton and linen in earth tones and off-white shades. This is the season for Theatre fans to get back to nature. The latest offerings are steeped in a country folk feel and a natural appeal with simple cotton white dresses with floral prints along the hemline plus leaf prints, checks and ginghams. Nautical stripes also make an appearance in a few items with bolder shades like pink and neon tones.
ASAVA
After Wall Street, Asava hasn't yet gone away from the East Side of the US and for the spring/summer 2010, it travels to Upper West Side New York to twist and turn the preppy neatness of well-off middle-class students to achieve the ``Other Upper West Side'' look. Defined as being off-balance and edgy, the collection takes on uniforms and trench coats with the brand's favourite materials: Duchess silk, silk satin, silk chiffon and taffeta.
KLOSET
Now, Kloset has done the equivalent of a cinematic self-remake (think MC Chatrichalerm Yukol remaking his own 1975 classic Kwam Rak Krang Sudtai). The brand resurrects, reinterprets and modernises its very first collection, ``Country Chic'', and takes us back to a country house and farmyard feel with its ``Rustic Elegance'' line. Are we all going folksy? Sure, and what's wrong with being a bit country, especially when you can hear cows mooing and ducks quacking from your colleagues' computer as they play Farmville?
Forms vary from short jumpsuits to flirty chiffon mini and maxi dresses in beige, grey, white, yellow and lilac colours. Kloset's trademark prints for this season incorporate all-natural and rustic elements that only make you think of a countryside holiday from daisies to farmhouse hardware.
SENADA
Senada crafts its spring/summer collection based on the season's staple shades of white, black and navy blue while bringing back the nostalgia of girlishness into the new urban chic direction of the brand. Fused into the basic palette are fluorescent pinks and yellows, lemon, turquoise as well as pastels including mint green, icy blue and lavender tones.
emAdding to the brand's signature crisp forms such as straight cotton and linen dresses are flowing maxi dresses with the season's signature multi-coloured splash-dot prints that redefine daywear glamour. Senada's fascination with techniques is translated into the new draping that creates a whole new volume and dimension, most notably on a few miniskirts in purple and brownish gold.
GREYHOUND ORIGINAL
Greyhound Original references various periods of classic and modern art in its spring/summer 2010 ``Aspect of Art'' collection. The dark glamour exuberance of its previous autumn/winter line is toned down to more simple shapes and forms, focusing this time on the attitudes that have made the brand what it is today _ the artistic inspirations that come in ink-jet printing on T-shirts, shirts and jackets or painting prints on dresses.
Key colours such as white, grey and black, with an addition of green and light blue come in cotton, tensel and rayon. Those preferring classic, hands-on items like jumpsuits, jackets, wide-legged trousers and plain-coloured dresses will be delighted now that Greyhound Original has a series of pieces that can be your wardrobe staple for the seasons to come.
ISSUE
Spring/summer 2010 sees designer Bhubawit ``Roj'' Kritpholnara turning back the clock to 70,000 BC in search of the lost continent Lemuria. The journey translates into Issue's signature pieces including linen, chiffon and silk dresses in the form of Tahitian tribal tattoos. Added to ensure a summer bon voyage are nautical motifs from sailor cosplay jackets to striped maxi dresses. Steeped in Issue's trademark palette of off-white, white, yellow and red, the collection incorporates a lot of navy blue with highlighted pieces ranging from strapless tropical floral prints that are asymmetrical on tiered dresses, Tahitian tattoo print silk minidresses to nautical stripes on cotton maxi dresses.
PLAYHOUND BY GREYHOUND
Playhound looks back at the western dominance and folksy feel combined with punk attitude of the 1990s for its summer inspiration. Bringing back the Wild West, the collection is abundant in folksy, western and cowboy motifs, from chequered fitted shirts and leather jackets to fringed suede western-style jackets. Checks are prevalent in all items from pouf-sleeved crop blouses, dress shirts, men's fitted shorts as well as shirts for both men and women. The silhouette notes the summer trend of loose-and-fit combo, pairing large leather jackets with micro trousers or fitted shirts with wide-legged bottoms or maxi skirts. Playhound's signature ripped and torn techniques and graphics are scattered all through the collection that is built on a palette of black, white, coal grey and pastels.
