UN development chief says Myanmar, Thailand face challenges

by Ian Timberlake, June 16, 2010
HANOI (AFP) - Myanmar faces a tough task to eradicate extreme poverty and meet other global development goals, while political instability is holding back Thailand's progress, the UN development chief says.

In an interview with AFP, Helen Clark also said Vietnam had "a pretty good story to tell" about its efforts to achieve the so-called Millennium Development Goals, but faces a major challenge from climate change and rising sea levels.

Clark said military-ruled Myanmar, with "huge poverty", will find it difficult to meet any of the eight development goals by the 2015 global target.

"It would be tough," Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said Tuesday on the sidelines of a conference.

The former New Zealand prime minister said Myanmar has the lowest foreign aid per capita of any developing country, and "political factors" restrict what the UNDP can do in Myanmar, "so it's not so easy to make progress there at this time."

Myanmar, which has detained democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for most of the past two decades, is under European Union and United States sanctions.

Neighbouring Thailand has made reasonable progress in tackling poverty, Clark said, but further development is being hindered by political tensions.

Outbreaks of violence in Bangkok during two months of anti-government protests from March until May killed 90 people, wounded nearly 1,900, and left the country deeply divided.

"Clearly, instability holds back a country's development progress, and you end up punching below your weight when you could be punching to, or above, your weight," she said.

The unrest followed more than three years of political instability after the army seized power from then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a 2006 bloodless coup.

"Things haven't been stable since and I think what's really needed is a national dialogue on how to move to elections which are seen as free and fair and people will accept the result," said Clark, who assumed her post in April last year.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called a September summit in New York to accelerate efforts toward reaching the 2015 development goals deadline.

Clark said Vietnam will be able to report good progress towards the goals of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, and reducing child and maternal mortality.

The country has work to do to combat HIV/AIDS and add to the existing progress on access to water and basic sanitation, she said, while the environmental cost of old-style industrialisation also needs to be addressed.

But fast-growing Vietnam, which this year is set to attain "middle-income" status, faces a "huge challenge" from climate change, Clark said.

"And I believe that the government is acutely aware of this, aware now that Vietnam is one of the most exposed countries in the world to rising sea levels, intensity and frequency... of adverse weather events like typhoons," she said.

Vietnam is planning for a one-metre (3.3 feet) rise in sea levels by 2100, which would inundate about 31,000 square kilometres (12,400 square miles) of land -- an area about the size of Belgium -- unless dykes and drainage systems are strengthened, a UN discussion paper said in December.

It said the inundation threat is greatest in the Mekong Delta, the country's main rice production area. Vietnam is the world's second-biggest rice exporter.

If that land becomes unusable there are "serious implications" for the region, Clark said.

She spoke on the sidelines of a conference to review a pilot programme that aims to improve the coherence and effectiveness of UN assistance. Vietnam and Pakistan are among eight countries worldwide participating in the pilot which, the UN says, has hastened achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Bahraini sex shop thrives in conservative Gulf

Bahraini sex shop thrives in conservative Gulf

This photo retrieved June 15, 2010 is from www.google.co.th. Khadija Ahmed's sex shop has survived against all odds and some particularly intense scrutiny from customs officials since it opened in Bahrain in 2008.

By Frederik Richter, June 15, 2010
MANAMA (Reuters Life!) – Where does one buy lingerie, sex toys and ointments designed to enhance female sexual pleasure in a Gulf region which frowns on open displays of sexuality?

From a lady in a traditional headscarf of course.

Khadija Ahmed's sex shop has survived against all odds and some particularly intense scrutiny from customs officials since it opened in Bahrain in 2008.

Ahmed's shop, a rare sight in the region, sells a wide range of lingerie, creams to delay male orgasm and sex toys out of the tiny Khadija Fashion House south of Manama, or through her website (www.khadijamall.com) to customers across the region.

A modestly dressed Ahmed in a traditional flowing black abaya and headscarf told Reuters that most of the items she sells are already available in Bahrain's fashion shops and pharmacies anyway and that she shuns some products to avoid stirring public anger.

"I don't sell vibrators for example, as this is against Islam," she said, adding that her faith banned the replication or display of sensitive parts of the body. However, other toys such as vibration rings were fine, she said.

Ahmed said she has not encountered much trouble with the public in Bahrain once she replaced lingerie in her display window with short dresses after complaints from neighbors and a nearby mosque.

This photo was taken in July, 2009. Considered one of the more liberal countries in the Gulf, Bahrain allows the sale of alcohol in bars and designated shops. Khadija Ahmed, the owner of the sex shop, is planning to open more shops in Dubai and Lebanon. AFP Photo.
Discussing and displaying sex in public is a taboo in most Middle Eastern countries, but Islamic scholars have also said that sex toys are legitimate if used by married couples.

Bahrain is considered one of the more liberal countries in the Gulf, allowing the sale of alcohol in bars and designated shops. Saudis, Qataris and Kuwaitis flock to the island kingdom each weekend to enjoy its nightlife.

Ahmed's most recent challenge is an ongoing legal case over a complaint by a customs official. She often has trouble getting her shipments cleared through customs and once ran into a spot of trouble when an official refused to clear a shipment of massage tools and vibration rings.

"These are closed-minded people....or maybe they're just jealous," she said.

Ahmed, who says she is not aware of any similar shop in the region, says she has many customers from the United Arab Emirates and in deeply conservative Saudi Arabia.

"Sometimes I personally go there with my brother to deliver, but only orders above 150 Bahraini dinars ($398)," she said.

She is now considering opening branches in Dubai, Lebanon and in one of Bahrain's shopping malls, as her store has grown too small to display all of her products on shelves.

Klong Srabua Potters Preserving Original Techniques

Klong Srabua Potters Preserving Original Techniques
UPDATE : 21 June 2010

Borannaree

The potters of Klong Srabua ('Srabua Canal'), a sub-district of Ayutthaya's Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, 80 kilometers north of Bangkok, continue to produce their distinctive wares by hand. Fortunately, over a period covering several centuries, the traditional skills required to produce the hand-crafted earthenware have successfully been passed down from one generation to the next.

While modern technology has long been utilized to mass produce certain kinds of earthenware goods, the potters of Klong Srabua largely avoid the use of machinery in the production process, preferring to follow the labor-intensive methods long adhered to by their ancestors.

Maintaining Traditions
According to 72-year-old Boonchuay Si-U, one of only a handful of potters operating a kiln in the village, pottery making was still the most popular activity among residents until about 30 years ago. Today, only about six to seven households are still operating kilns, while even fewer people are interested in acquiring the necessary skills, she says.

In days gone by, it was mainly women who pursued the skills required to produce pottery by hand, Boonchuay says. While not every household had its own kiln, local women could still earn some extra money by helping to produce the earthenware when they weren't working in the rice fields. The men were responsible for carrying out other household activities, according to Boonchuay.

Boonchuay says she picked up her own pottery making skills by watching her grandmother at work and, later, by assisting her mother at the kiln.

Practical Uses
Traditionally, cooks put the pots produced at Klong Srabua to good use by cooking curries in them. However, these days they are most commonly used by restaurants as a form of storage jar for curries. While the earthenware pots certainly represent a unique form of 'Thainess', they're also said to enhance the aroma of the food stored inside them.

Boonchuay produces pots in her own home, having turned it into a production base. Her residence includes an area for storing the pots, an area for producing the pots, as well as a kiln.

The production method used in Klong Srabua differs from those used elsewhere in the kingdom, according to Boochuay, who points out that the process is even more labor intensive. The clay is prepared by mixing clay with sieved sand and water.

In order to ensure that the ingredients are properly blended, the mixing process is carried out by using the feet and treading the mixture until it achieves the correct consistency. This process can take several hours, according to Boonchuay.

An Original Finish
The other factor that distinguishes pottery produced in Klong Srabua from pieces produced elsewhere is the finishing process, which involves striking the pot with a flat piece of wood, according to Boonchuay. While other potters tend to finish their pots on a potter's wheel, the potters of Klong Srabua only use the wheel to create the basic shape of the pot. To ensure the pottery is as thin as possible on completion, the pot is allowed to dry slightly and is then struck with the wood in order to perfect the finish.

Throughout the pottery making process at Klong Srabua, the only form of machinery used is a belt-driven potter's wheel. Each item is also polished and enameled before being fired in a kiln. A specific craftsperson is used for each of these processes in order that the manufacturing can be carried out in a timely manner.

Boonchuay's own area of expertise relates to the preparation of the clay. In order to complete her production, she turns to neighbors who possess each of the other individual skills she requires. Boonchuay says she usually prepares about 400 pots before firing them in the kiln. The pots are then distributed to markets nationwide.

“Although the work is laborious, I am determined to preserve our traditions and will continue to produce pottery in this traditional way,” she says.

Klong Srabua pottery is a source of great pride within the village. Relevant authorities arrange cultural trips to the village for schoolchildren from within the same province from time to time, so they can also get the opportunity to try out some of the techniques in a bid to develop a love for this unique form of ancestral wisdom among generations of young Thais.

Pran Havana: Comfy Getaway Benefits From a Splendid Setting

Pran Havana: Comfy Getaway Benefits From a Splendid Setting
UPDATE : 21 June 2010

Youthapong Charoenpan

Since the turn of the century, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Pranburi district has transformed itself from being a sleepy coastal village into a popular vacation destination thanks to its serene ambiance and excellent beach. While it was once rather overshadowed by the draw of its more populous neighbor - Hua Hin - Pranburi has achieved a good deal of success in developing its own unique identity over recent years.

Located right next to Pranburi Beach, Pran Havana is a comfortable 10-room resort hotel, featuring contemporary-style architectural features and decorative styles. Each room features a floral theme - Burgundy, Cha-Ba (‘Pink Hibiscus‘), Dong Dueng (‘Glory Lily‘), Donya (‘Pink Mussaenda 'Queen Sirikit'), Jasmine, Lotus, Orchid and Rose.

The receptionist greeted me with a broad smile and a welcome drink before personally guiding me to my room. Such dedication to service and warm hospitality ensured that I quickly felt right at home at Pran Havana.

Incredible Views
Located on the third floor, the Cha-Ba-themed room (2,800 baht [US$86] per night) boasts a breathtaking view of the beach, the ocean and the surrounding landscaped gardens. The sizable veranda even includes a basic barbecue area for guests who fancy a meal straight from the grill.

I must admit that I spent the majority of the daytime during my three-day, two-night stay at the hotel shuttling from my room to the beach. It should be noted that the sunrises here provide a particularly awe-inspiring start to the day.

Since Pranburi has become better known, it has also grown in stature as a weekend escape for residents of the capital, so if you really want to ‘get away from it all’, clearly a weekday visit would best service your requirements.

While Pran Havana isn’t necessarily the most glamorous hotel in Pranburi, it nevertheless provides guests with a good deal of privacy and tranquility. The hotel is also a safe place to stay thanks to its team of security personnel, which provides cover around the clock thanks to a pattern of shifts.

Splendid Service
I was also very impressed by the standard of service at Pran Havana. One evening I fancied grilled chicken and somtam (‘spicy papaya salad’) and since it wasn’t available ‘in house’ a member of staff kindly went out to purchase some for me from a stall located nearby.

It's always worth checking in advance if considering a stay at Pran Havana, since the resort often offers deals during the rainy season (June through late October).

For further information, or to make a reservation, contact Tel: +66 (0)81 820 8333, or +66 (0)32 570 077, or visit the official website at http://www.pranhavana.net.

Transport Connections:
Car: From Bangkok, take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) and follow the signs for Hua Hin.

Continue along Highway 4 until you reach the Pranburi intersection and then turn left into Pranburi-Paknam Pran Road. Continue along this road for about 10 kilometers and then take the next turn on your right once you see the temple of Wat Nahuay. Follow this road for about 5 km until you arrive to Naresuan Beach, where you should turn left. You'll see the hotel on your right.

Islands Boast A Bountiful Supply of Inspiring Dive Sites

Islands Boast A Bountiful Supply of Inspiring Dive Sites
UPDATE : 22 June 2010

Maneeya Dhammataree

The pier at Pak Bara in Satun province's La-Ngu district provides visitors with easy access to a wealth of amazing islands that form part of the Tarutao National Park.

Located within the Andaman Sea, this archipelago includes 51 islands, which provide visitors to the area with an array of stunningly picturesque views. Among these islands are several of Thailand's leading dive sites, including Mu Koh Adang-Rawi (the Adang-Rawi island group), Koh Khai, as well as Koh Lipe, which is probably the best known.

A Convenient Base
Probably the most practical solution is to begin your journey at Mu Koh Adang-Rawi. Koh Adang and Koh Rawi are two of the largest three islands within the group and they benefit from possessing white, sandy beaches and impressive mountainous terrain, featuring heavily forested areas. These islands are ideal for those who wish to prepare for a snorkeling or scuba diving trip. There's terrain here that's ideal for skin diving and it's suitable for both adult amateurs or children. Although it's quite shallow (about knee height), I spotted plenty of colorful fish swimming around me!

The only downside is that these two islands can occasionally get rather packed with tourists since there are lots of activities based in the area, including treks and visits to nearby waterfalls. If you are in search of bit more peace and quiet, you can ask to be dropped off by the stretch of coast alongside the other side of the island. Here you will again find lots of colorful fish swimming around, as well as unspoiled stretches of coral reef. Just make absolutely sure that your boat driver or tour leader is completely familiar with the area and clearly understands your plans or requests.

Resist Temptation
Before heading off to any other dive sites, it's first worth stopping off at Koh Hin Ngam ('island of beautiful rocks') to experience a unique natural attraction.

Located just 2.5 kilometers from Koh Adang-Rawi, Koh Hin Ngam is covered in millions of black, shiny and smooth pebbles that feature fascinating patterns. Somehow, this mysterious attraction is even more attractive in areas where the stones are wet, since the water makes them appear even brighter. You'll probably notice a number of piles of pebbles around since many visitors to the island have a kind of competition to see who can build the highest.

Nevertheless, visitors to the island should refrain from taking any of the pebbles off the island. As well as posing a threat to a protected area, legend has it that anyone who takes one of the pebbles home will suffer a disaster due to the presence on the island of the 'ghost of Koh Hin Ngam'.

Marine Life Magnificence
After experiencing Koh Hin Ngam's unique, natural charm, I would recommend you head for the islands of Koh Yang and Koh Jabang.

Although it is a rather small island, Koh Yang is nevertheless an excellent source of impressive hard forms of coral, such as brain coral, leaf coral, sea anemones and staghorn coral. Koh Yang is just a short journey from Koh Adang.

If you're not a strong swimmer, don't worry too much since help is at hand. Local operators will be happy to supply you with a buoyancy ring and then personally guide you to the most interesting coral sites.
Meanwhile, Koh Jabang, which is about 20 minutes by boat from Koh Adang, is renowned for the Jabang water channel, which is home to some excellent skin diving sites. The channel came about due to a large number of rocks, which are located about 15-30 meters below the surface. It's home to several colorful forms of soft coral, sea anemones and schools of colorful fish.

Since the undercurrent at the Jabang water channel is strong enough to drown you, local tour or boat operators typically encircle the area using ropes tied up to boats and floats. In such cases, visitors can enjoy the view in complete safety by holding on to the ropes while snorkeling.

An Overnight Option
Located just 2 km from Koh Adang, Koh Lipe is home to a group of Urak Lawoi, often referred to as chao leh ('sea gypsies') in Thai. This island boasts an unspoiled stretch of beach and clear waters, which often leads the island to be described as 'Thailand's Maldives'. There are plenty of soft coral reefs located around the island so it's an ideal place for snorkeling or diving. If you find that the sun is beginning to set, don't worry too much as it's possible to stay overnight on the island. However, if you're on a budget, check in advance to avoid disappointment and to secure an affordable accommodation option.

Another option is to visit the island of Koh Khai, which is about 26 km from Pak Bara Pier. Koh Khai is located between Koh Adang and Koh Tarutao and in some ways it can be considered to be a 'symbol' of Tarutao National Park.

It's not that its natural attractions are generally more impressive than the other islands, but the presence of a heart-shaped stone archway that reminds many visitors of the shape of the archipelago itself.
A number of travel agents and speedboat operators provide services to the islands from Pak Bara Pier throughout the day.

Transport Connections:
Car: From Bangkok, take Highway 4 and drive through the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. Once you pass through Chumphon, get onto Highway 41, which will take you through the provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phatthalung. From Phatthalung, get back onto Highway 4 and drive through to Songkhla province's Rattaphum district. Turn right and follow Highway 406 to Satun. The journey covers 973 km in total.

Train: Take a train south from Hualamphong Station, Bangkok's main railway station, to Hat Yai. Take a tuk tuk ('auto rickshaw') from Hat Yai station to the Agricultural Market (fare about 10 baht). Passenger van services operate hourly between the market and Pak Bara Pier from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm.

Scientists scramble for Japanese asteroid capsule

Scientists scramble for Japanese asteroid capsule

Woomera, AUSTRALIA : This handout photo taken on June 13, 2010, and released June 14 shows JAXA personnel celebrating after the capsule carried by the Hayabusa spacecraft burning up over South Australia on re-entry, leaving the heat-resistant pod to parachute back to land within the Woomera military zone. The Japanese space capsule which landed in the remote Australian Outback is set to be retrieved by scientists who are hoping it contains the first asteroid sample ever brought to earth. The capsule became the first to land on an asteroid and return to earth, ending an historic seven-year mission, officials said. The Hayabusa craft, which left earth in 2003, reached the potato-shaped Itokawa asteroid some two years later. RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE / NO SALES / NO COMMERCIAL USE AFP PHOTO/HO/JAXA

SYDNEY (AFP) - A capsule that scientists hope will contain a little slice of outer space after a seven-year journey across the solar system was sitting in the Australian Outback on Monday waiting to be recovered.

The pod, which was ejected from a Japanese space probe as it burned up in a spectacular meteor-like display over Australia, could hold the first piece of asteroid ever brought to Earth.

The heat-resistant pod parachuted into the Woomera military zone after being ejected from Japan's Hayabusa spacecraft as it flamed back into the planet's atmosphere late Sunday.

Australian National University scientist Trevor Ireland, who watched the spacecraft's reentry from the Outback town of Coober Pedy, said it looked like a meteor as it flashed orange across the night sky.

"It looked just like that in terms of fragmentation and pieces flying off it and glowing, it was just absolutely amazing," Ireland told AFP by telephone from Woomera.

Scientists from Japan's space agency JAXA said they have located the capsule, from which they hope to collect a sample of the Itokawa asteroid, following a helicopter search over the remote region.

"The plan is to pick it up today, package it up and get it over to Tokyo as quickly as possible," Ireland said.

Despite enduring temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun on re-entry, the round-bottomed, 20-centimetre (7-inch) tall capsule would be cool enough to be transported after a night in the Outback, he added.

The Hayabusa, which was launched in 2003, has endured a series of technical mishaps over its seven-year, five billion-kilometre (three-billion-mile) journey to the ancient far-flung asteroid.

It is not known whether the craft was able to collect a sample from the asteroid, but any material it does have could shed light on the early history of the solar system, the formation of planets, and help reduce the threat of asteroid collisions in the future, scientists say.

Yoshiyuki Hasegawa, JAXA's associate executive director, said when scientists knew the capsule had made a better-than-expected soft landing, "we were very happy".

He said excitment had been high because the craft had only been designed to last four years and there were concerns about whether its battery would last the full seven years or if its control system would malfunction.

Ireland said the mood among the international scientists studying the craft was "hyper" after the capsule landed, successfully deploying its parachute and signalling systems so it could be found it in the vast Outback.

"It was a huge worry that the parachute wouldn't go off, the (signalling) beacons wouldn't go off, and that it would come down in a mud lake and get lost in the landscape," he said.

Ireland, who expects to be among the scientists who will analyse the contents of the capsule, said the landing was a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for scientists.

He said the story of the little car-sized spaceship, which had travelled across the solar system, encountering various technical troubles along the way, and then successfully negotiated its re-entry to Earth was like a movie plot.

"If there is a sample in there that we can analyse that will be a bonus," he said. "It's already been a tremendous mission. It really is a fairy tale."

The historic mission means for the first time a spacecraft has made contact with an asteroid and returned to Earth.

Aboriginal tribespeople will assist in the recovery of the canister to ensure no damage is done to sites sacred to their ancient culture, and it will then remain sealed until it arrives at the JAXA facility near Tokyo, for analysis by scientists from Japan, Australia and the United States.

SAO PAULO (AFP) – Brazil's designs for the 2010-2011 summer season -- including the inevitable sexy bikinis -- are sashaying down the catwalks daily to next Monday under the overarching theme "Anima" ("animated" or "lively" in Portuguese).

Brazil kicked off Latin America's premier fashion event, Sao Paulo Fashion Week, Wednesday, with parades showcasing its economic prosperity and optimism.

"We're a young country, a young culture, with an enormous potential for growth, for development," organizer Paulo Borges told reporters ahead of the first shows.

Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian beauty who has become the world's top-paid model, will Sunday be making her first catwalk show since giving birth to a baby four months ago with her husband, US football player Tom Brady.

The Sao Paulo Fashion Week this year trains the spotlight on Brazilians' obsession with brand names and stylish clothes, underpinning a 50-billion-dollar fashion market that is becoming one of the most profitable in the world for the big luxury groups.

It also confirms Brazil's growing economic power.

Latin America's biggest economy, ranked 10th in the world, is currently expanding at nine percent on an annual basis -- almost as much as the global champion China.

A leading consulting firm specializing in Brazil's luxury market, MCF Consultoria, said the sector expanded 11.5 percent last year, when much of the rest of the world was tightening its belts in the global downturn, and could grow more than 17 percent this year.

"Brazilians love to shop," the firm's director, Carlos Ferreirinha, told AFP.

"In Brazil, people will spend what they do not have. Spending in Brazil is much higher than any discretionary money capability," he said.

He explained that shops regularly allow customers to pay off items in monthly instalments, interest free.

That, and the soaring value of Brazil's currency, the real, have pushed spending on imported goods denominated in dollars or euros to a record level.

French label Louis Vuitton, whose handbags grace the arm of almost every woman in Sao Paulo's rich Jardins neighbourhood, has done very well from the trend, winning brand-recognition with 23 percent of Brazilian consumers, according to a survey conducted by MCF Consultoria.

Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Dior and Gucci also have big profiles.

Brazilians are fashion snobs, insisting on wearing the very latest collections from Europe, Ferreirinha explained.

"They want to give the impression that they are very updated, very contemporary, and this is translated into impulsiveness," he said.

And there no immediate prospect of Brazil's gaping consumerist maw snapping shut any time soon, according to Ferreirinha.

"We're going to have at least 20 years more of very important growth. Brazil is still very much behind the development process that everybody believes we can have," he said, pointing to a nascent but rapidly growing middle class.
